Newport News/Williamsburg International Reports Steady Passenger Growth

05/10/2011

For Immediate Release

NEWPORT NEWS, VA, May 10, 2011 – The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF) increased passenger traffic by 3.6% in April.  84,677 passengers used the Airport in April 2011 compared with 81,728 passengers in April 2010.  The airport has steadily increased passenger traffic every month in the first quarter of 2011 as well.

 January

 +13.6%

 February

 +10.0%

 March

 +9.0%

Year-to-date the airport’s passenger numbers are up 8.7%.  This equates to an additional 23,941 passengers using PHF from January through April 2011.

“The Peninsula Airport Commission is extremely proud to report positive first quarter passenger statistics, with the trend continuing through the beginning of the second quarter of 2011.

We attribute this industry leading passenger growth to continued support from our local businesses, military and federal government workforce, and leisure travelers looking for a value added experience.  The sustained increase we have experienced with our passenger traffic is testimony to the hard work of our staff, and that of our vendor partners.  We are extremely optimistic and look forward to a busy summer season at the airport” stated Stephen Mallon, Chairman, Peninsula Airport Commission (PAC).

PHF’s passenger numbers are not the only thing getting larger; Frontier Airlines and Delta Air Lines have increased their aircraft size for the summer as well.  On Monday, Frontier Airlines landed the 162-seat A320 at PHF.  In addition to the larger Frontier airplane, Delta Air Lines has upgraded their 50 and 70-seat regional jets to 142-seat MD-88 jets. More airline seats on larger airplanes are now arriving and departing from PHF.

The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is served by four airlines: AirTran Airways, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and US Airways with non-stop service to seven domestic destinations (Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Denver, NY-LaGuardia, Orlando and Philadelphia) with connections throughout the world.
